We Provide Laser Therapy for Toenail Fungus
Dr. Navin Gupta has been practicing podiatry for over 30 years, and one of the most common problems he sees is fungal infections of the feet and nails. A fungus infection of the skin is not too difficult to cure, but NAIL fungus proves much more difficult. Certain medicines have dangerous side effects and are only successful about 10% of the time. In the past, many people were forced to have their toenails removed permanently.
Fun Fact: One of the most common fungi found in the nails is the mold that is normally found in hay bales!
Is It Fungus?
While you may think it’s fungus, thick, deformed, discolored and symptomatic nails can be caused by conditions other than fungus, including:
- Psoriasis of the nails
- Subungual heloma
- Pityriasis
- Onychauxis
- Onychogryphosis
- Yeast infection
- Combination of problems
While not a common condition, melanoma of the nail or the nail bed can be overlooked as fungus. However, if ignored, it can be deadly. If you are concerned, you need to have your nails evaluated by a podiatrist.

Laser Therapy FAQs
1. How does the laser kill the fungus?
The laser shines a specific wavelength light through the nail that raises the temperature to a level that kills the fungus. The specific laser light used in this treatment and the temperature do not affect the good cells.
2. Will I feel any pain?
You may feel some warmth during the treatment, otherwise there is no pain associated with the laser treatment.
How much time does it take for the treatment?
It takes about 15 minutes to prepare the toenails for the treatment and then about 15 minutes for the laser treatment
4. Does the laser really work?
Clinical studies have shown an 88% success rate with one treatment and 96% success rate after two treatments. The after-treatment care and precautions assure 100% success.
5. Will my nails look good after the treatment?
The laser treatment only destroys the fungus. It does NOT affect the growth pattern of the nail. As the new nail grows out, it pushes the bad off. Normally, toenails take nine to 12 months to fully grow out. Healthy new growth should be visible within 2-3 months.
6. What are the side effects of the laser treatment?
The Cool Breeze laser used in our clinic is fully safe. The clinical studies have shown no adverse reactions, injuries, disabilities or any other side effects, unlike some other treatments. On the other hand, most medications available for treatment of nail fungus come with various side effects, some even very serious.
7. Are there any medicines to take as part of the treatment?
No. No oral medicines are needed.
8. Do I have to be off of my feet after treatment?
No. You are able to walk just as well as you did before treatment. The treatment does not cause any disability.
9. Is laser treatment covered by insurance?
Your initial consultation and lab tests are covered by insurance. At the present time, the insurance companies do NOT pay for the laser treatment. If you have a Health Savings Account, Medical IRA or a Medical Flex Spending Account, you can pay for the procedure with these funds. Otherwise, payment can be made with cash, credit or debit card.
